Oil Change U.S. Response: Trump’s Speech at Fracking Conference Was a Dumpster Fire

Today, President Donald Trump spoke to a fracking industry conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In response to the president’s speech, David Turnbull, Strategic Communications Director at Oil Change U.S., released the following statement:

“From the hearty handshakes between the president and fossil fuel industry executives, to the toxic masculinity exuding from the president as he heckled protesters, to Trump’s rambling description of catastrophic deregulation at the expense of our climate and communities, this speech was a classic Trump dumpster fire.

“While Trump’s descriptions of his administration’s actions were largely overblown or inaccurate, the reality is Trump’s oil-soaked administration has paved the way for the U.S. oil and gas industry to run roughshod on communities at the frontlines and to drill and frack our climate to the brink.

“Our next president must do precisely the opposite. We need a president who will not shake hands with industry executives, but will instead take them to court for their crimes. We need a president who gets serious about a just transition away from fossil fuel production, not one attempting to bring back the past and resurrect a dirty industry.

“Thankfully, what we’re seeing from Democratic presidential candidates is a newfound willingness to directly confront the fossil fuel industry. All of the top candidates have signed the No Fossil Fuel Money pledge, most agree we must end new fossil fuel production on federal lands, and many want to stop fracking entirely. This is the kind of leadership our country needs. What was on display in Pittsburgh today was a disaster in every sense of the word.”

Oil Change U.S. response to Julián Castro signing the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge

Today, former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and current presidential candidate Julián Castro became the latest signatory of the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge. In response, David Turnbull, Strategic Communications Director of Oil Change U.S., one of the organizations in the No Fossil Fuel Money pledge coalition, released the following statement:

“We enthusiastically welcome Julián Castro to the No Fossil Fuel Money pledge signers club. With his announcement today that he will reject contributions from fossil fuel industry executives along with corporate PACs and lobbyists, he joins thirteen of his counterparts – well over the majority of the Democratic field – in signing the pledge.”

The writing is now on the wall for the fossil fuel industry. No longer will we allow the industry destroying our climate to trample on our democracy as well. We urgently need a just and managed phase-out of fossil fuel production in the United States, and we need political leaders willing to stand up to the industry to make it happen. We’re heartened that Secretary Castro has recognized this imperative, and we look forward to hearing more on how he plans to tackle the climate crisis if elected.

Oil Change U.S. reaction to Beto O’Rourke signing the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge

Today, former U.S. Representative and current presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke became the latest signatory of the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge. In response, David Turnbull, Strategic Communications Director of Oil Change U.S., one of the organizations in the No Fossil Fuel Money pledge coalition, released the following statement:

“Beto’s signing of the No Fossil Fuel Money pledge is the latest indication that the terms of political debate on climate change have fundamentally shifted. With the climate crisis now the top issue of concern for Democratic voters, the question to candidates is no longer simply ‘Do you believe climate change exists?’ but ‘How brave will you be in standing up to the fossil fuel industry and proposing solutions at the scale required?’

“Beto’s signing of the pledge after weeks of resistance is also a testament to the power of the grassroots climate movement and the doggedness of those concerned about our climate crisis. Without pressure, we know that today’s announcement may not have come.

“While signing the pledge doesn’t prove by itself that any candidate is a true climate leader, it’s a critical indication that they may be willing to take on the out-of-control fossil fuel industry that’s threatening our communities and climate every day. We absolutely welcome Beto joining eleven other major candidates in signing this pledge to resist the influence of the fossil fuel industry, and look forward to a rigorous debate in the Democratic field moving forward on solutions that match the scale of the problem.

    “Game on.”
